Not being in an academy - or being released from one - is not the end of a football career. Most professionals did not glide through as academy golden boys. These are the real alternative routes into the game.

The non-league pyramid

English football is a connected pyramid of 11+ levels. Tiers 1-4 are the Premier League and EFL; tier 5, the National League, is the top of "non-league". The National League System, run by the FA, provides promotion and relegation all the way up, so any club - and any player - can climb.

The higher steps of non-league (Steps 1-2) contain many full-time, professional clubs, and EFL scouts watch them constantly for players who were overlooked or released as youngsters. Establish yourself at Step 2 or 3 and you can attract scouts and agents. The flagship example is Jamie Vardy, who went from non-league Stocksbridge Park Steels through Halifax and Fleetwood to Leicester for a then non-league record £1m fee - and a Premier League title.

College and university football

  • UK universities (BUCS): British Universities & Colleges Sport runs competitive university football, letting you keep playing at a good level while studying for a degree - a sensible way to keep the door open.
  • US soccer scholarships: UK players can win scholarships across NCAA Division 1 and 2, NAIA and junior colleges, combining a US degree with high-level soccer. Start the process 12-24 months before enrolment, and get verified game footage ready.

If you have just been released

Being released is common - the vast majority of academy players are. What matters is what you do next:

  • Drop into an appropriate step of the non-league system and play men's football to toughen up - as many young players do on loan.
  • Rack up performances and goals to get noticed; performance data and a genuine highlight reel help scouts.
  • Consider the US scholarship route if you are academically minded - but plan early.
  • Keep education alive as a genuine plan B while you chase it.

  • "No academy means no career." The non-league pyramid is a genuine, scouted route to the EFL and beyond.
  • "Non-league is just a kickabout." Steps 1-2 are full-time, professional and watched by EFL scouts.
