How to Get Scouted for Football: What Scouts Actually Look For

Here is the truth that surprises most parents: you do not apply to a football academy - you get spotted. Scouting in England is overwhelmingly done by watching players live, not by reading emails or highlight reels. This is how it really works, and how to put yourself in front of the right eyes.

How academy scouting actually works

Scouts attend grassroots, Sunday-league, school and district matches looking for players to invite into a development centre or academy. Formal academy registration starts at Under-9, with informal identification from around 5-8. Under the EPPP, Category 1 academies can recruit nationally from Under-12; lower-category academies work within a smaller radius.

What scouts actually look for

Good scouts assess against the FA's four corner model - technical/tactical, physical, psychological and social - not just who is quickest or scores most. In fact, a 2024 study of recruitment staff found psychological factors were rated significantly higher than technical, physical or social ones. Scouts watch the whole experience: how you arrive, warm up, talk to teammates and the referee, and - crucially - how you react when things go wrong.

They also try to account for maturity. Being the biggest, fastest 11-year-old often just means you matured early; it does not predict long-term potential, and clubs are told to correct for it (see the relative age effect).

How to get seen

• Play for a competitive grassroots team with regular fixtures. Visibility and game time come first.
• Aim for district or county representative football - one of the biggest shop windows there is.

• Play in well-attended tournaments and showcases where scouts circulate.
• Let your coach flag genuine interest to a club's academy recruitment contact - but expect to be watched, not to "sign up".

Myths worth dropping

• "Email academies your highlight video and you'll get signed." Unsolicited video rarely leads anywhere - and it is a common vector for scams. Legitimate recruitment is live.
• "Scouts only want the flashiest kid." Attitude, decision-making and reaction to adversity weigh heaviest.
• "Trials are how everyone gets in." Trials exist, but most academy entry starts with being scouted - and any paid "trial" is a red flag (see academy trials).
